romantic wall tapestries

A tapestry is a specific type of fabric art that has been around since the Hellenistic times. These do not only come in the form of decorative wall hangings and wall art, but they also come in the form of throw pillow covers, table runners and mats, cushions, handbags, bell pulls and the like. Traditionally, these works of art were woven by hand, but through the passing of time and the development of new and advanced machinery, mechanical devices and instruments have been invented and created to make their production faster and easier. These decorative pieces of art come in a wide variety of different designs and subject matter. These include cityscapes and country scenes, flowers, hunting scenes, medieval scenes, unicorns, castles, Renaissance, religious, oriental or Asian, European, mythical stories and finally romantic subjects and themes.

One particular theme or subject matter that has grown extremely popular during this time period is romance. Romantic tapestries, which are also known as pastorals or pastoral tapestries, are, for the most part, well-known for their depiction and illustration of couples and groups that are engaged in different activities, like conversation, courtship, play time, drama, merrymaking, and romancing itself. This specific type of artwork reached the height of its popularity during the middle part of the 17th century and up until the 19th century. They exude the feelings of warmth, calmness and gentleness, and they very often make use of bright and colorful settings, such as gardens or landscapes, nature and even nautical places and beach backgrounds.

Wall tapestries with romance feature lovers dining al fresco at a romantic venue, frolicking on the sand or by the beach, having a picnic at a park or a garden, or even sneaking a kiss or two under the sun or the bright moonlight. The people depicted in these pieces of craftsmanship and art almost always convey a happy and cheerful mood and vibe that greatly helps in setting the tone and atmosphere of the specific room where it is displayed or shown. More often than not, romantic tapestries are well suited for display at the more private areas or parts of a person’s home or abode, especially since some of the pieces of art of this sort are considered by some groups and quarters as a light form of sexual art, and even erotica. Nevertheless, no matter where you choose to put these decorative art pieces, one thing is for sure: they will add vitality and joie de vivre to whichever area they are placed in.

Alex Hanson writes about the wall tapestries with romance, like The Kiss by Klimt, as one example by a famous artist.
